WEST SIDE STORY ('Somebody Call Michael' mix) Starring George Chakiris, Russ Tamblyn, Tucker Smith 'Beat It' and 'Bad' by Michael Jackson Edited by CFJ I think this video needs no description. The greatest tragedy about the Sharks and the Jets were that they didn't have Michael around. Peace. Robert Palmer talks about working with the hardest working man in show business. In the James Brown & Friends show in '88, the "young fella" performed I Feel Good and Try Me with Mr. Out of Sight himself.

Robert Palmer + Fred Astaire - Let's Face The Music And Dance

LET'S FACE THE MUSIC AND DANCE Written by Irving Berlin Performed by Robert Palmer Dance by Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers Choreographed by Hermes Pan Edited by CFJ Robert Palmer sings a masterpiece written by Irving Berlin for the movie Follow The Fleet, during the Pride tour, at Ritz, NYC, June 1983. And the video naturally features the incomparable pair, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, from all of their 9 films in 1930s - Flying Down To Rio (1933), The Gay Divorcee (1934), Roberta (1935), Top Hat (1935), Follow The Fleet (1936), Swing Time (1936), Shall We Dance (1937), Carefree (1938), and The Story Of Vernon And Irene Castle (1939). At first, as a big fan of the late Robert Palmer, I just wanted people to hear this fabulous and obscure cover version (which is actually much better than Taco's version in '84, in my opinion). But thought it would be better with something to watch, so here it is. Picking some of the finest moments of the Astaire/Rogers and editing them was simply fun. While editing the video, I was a bit annoyed to find that Ginger always turns or spins slower than Astaire, because if you cut a scene to Astaire's timing, it changes to another while Ginger has not finished spinning yet (Astaire's movement is razor-sharp and really smooth). I couldn't help sort of pitying her who had to pair with the dance god again and again....though Astaire always led her fluently with great skill! My favorite Astaire/Rogers film is possibly Roberta, or The Barkleys of Broadway, btw. I always love the strange relationship between them. The thin line between love and hate...and you never get whether they are lovers or friends. The combination was simply fabulous. I must say that watching only the dance scenes doesn't tell you why the pair was incomparable.

Sings Marvin Gaye classics in medley. Very impressive. It's been almost five years since he died, but I still miss him very much. The man was simply irreplaceable. I always wanted to be a man like that.

Sings the 1st single from Riptide on a Japanese TV show. Live on vocals. Too cool to be true. Simply irreproachable. Broadcast on (possibly) Nov 6, 1985. He visited Japan twice during the Riptide period - one time for the album promotion in Nov '85, and the next for concerts in May '86. I've heard he appeared on the same show and performed 'Addicted To Love' (should be in May '86), but I don't have it. If you have it or any other rare RP vids, get in touch!

A land of a thousand splits, in the aftermath of the Stormy Weather brought by the lightning Nicholas Bros. After the Jumpin' Jive girls, the queen of tap appears. In Lady Be Good (1941), she danced with a dog, and this time with a horse! This is not only the end of the movie, but also the grand finale of her stardom.

Here are the champs. The Nicholas Bros come out after the great Ink Spots. Dance director Nick Castle would rehash the scene later in You're My Everything (1949) with the Berry Bros and Dan Daily. You can also see a similar musical scene, featuring the Bobby Brooks Quartet and Tip Tap and Toe, in the 1943 movie Honeymoon Lodge. Yet another musical scene at a station. After the impressive performance of 'Do I Worry' by Bobby Brooks Quartet, Tip Tap and Toe come out. This sequence appears to be deeply influenced by a musical scene in The Great American Broadcast (1941) where the Nicholas Brothers (on suitcases) and the Ink Spots performed as baggage smashers.

An obscure flash act in the short film Smash Your Baggage. You can see one of them doing the same acrobatics as Sammy Davis Jr, and what's more, it's better than Davis. This is their only film appearance as far as I know. Don't ask me which is which!

Dan Daily and the Berry Brothers (only Ananias and Warren) perform Chattanooga Choo-Choo in You're My Everything (1949). Reminds me of Gene Kelly and the Nicholas Bros in Pirate (1948), but I like this one better. The song was originally performed by the Nicholas Bros and Dorothy Dandridge with the Glenn Miller Orchestra in San Valley Serenade (1941), and this performance is sort of a revamped version of the Nicholas Bros' routine at the Toledo station in The Great American Broadcast (1941). Nick Castle was a dance director in both TGAB and YME. This is not for people who haven't seen the Berry Bros. First you must see them as trio (Ananias, James, Warren) in Lady Be Good (1941) and Panama Hattie (1942).

Eleanor Powell + Berry Bros + C. Russell in Lady Be Good (1941)

Connie Russell, the Berry Brothers, and Eleanor Powell perform Fascinatin' Rhythm in Lady Be Good (1941). Some people have already uploaded excerpts from it, but this is in its entirety. Though I'm not a musical expert, I must say this is the most fascinating musical number I've ever seen. The song (by Gershwins), arrangement, singing, dancing...all the performances are simply the best and beautiful. No cheap gimmick like dancing on the ceiling or dancing with animated things (I don't deny those kind of musical scenes, but not my type). And moreover, this is one of Busby Berkeley's finest works. The man was, so to speak, a Hitchcock of the Hollywood musical. He knew exactly how musical scenes should be directed, shot and edited, just like Hitch knew how suspense scenes should be done. A true genius. Watching Berkeley's stuff, sometimes I even feel he's crazy! This number has lots of amazing moments, which are almost unreal - you see illusory silhouettes of musicians through a giant stage curtain, weird shadows across Russell's face, a strange space enclosed by the curtain where the Berry Bros perform, a stream of the tapping feet of the Bros, the pianist, and Powell (Look at the transparent sheet music. What a beautiful dissolve!), the pianos emerging one after another from the curtain, and after wandering within the dizzying space with no sense of dimension, you fainally get the whole view of the stage when the curtain rolls into a huge column. What a moment. Every shot was thought out. It's PERFECT. Everytime I watch this number, it even brings tears to my eyes, especially when Eleanor whirls on the passageway of the arms. I always adore Eleanor Powell dressed like a man with pants and a hat. Though I know she did a couple of great numbers afterwards, this was the end of her golden years, in my opinion. You can see the amazing behind-the-scene filming of Eleanor's Fascinatin' Rhythm sequence in That's Entertainment III (1994). It gives you an illusion as if you time-slipped to the past and sneaked into the studio. The Berry Brothers perform one of their favorite routines here. In this movie, you can also see them doing another song, You'll Never Know, featuring Ananias Berry's amazing strut. They did the same routines again in Boarding House Blues (1948). Strangely enough, this movie company didn't feature them in the That's Entertainment series in spite of having 4 great numbers of them (the other 2 are in Panama Hattie in 1942), which was absolutely a crime. Why? The only reason I can think of is that they were black and TOO GOOD. What a shame.

Bill Robinson in Harlem Is Heaven (1932)

Bill Robinson's famous stair tap routine in Harlem Is Heaven (1932). His sound and beat are the most recognizable. So groovy. I could listen to it all day! When I can't fall asleep, sometimes I remember this scene instead of couting sheeps. Gregory Hines did exactly the same routine at the end of the TV movie Bojangles (2001). BTW, Harlem Is Heaven is very hard to find. I have only this part from it. Does anyone have the whole film?
