Shortly after birth, the mother of the child bathed it in wine to see whether the child was strong. The ordinary Spartan was a citizen-warrior, or hoplite, trained to obey and endure. Leonidas was a king of Sparta, the 17th of the Agiad line, one of the sons of King Anaxandridas II of Sparta and a descendant of Heracles. In the Battle of Thermopylae of 480 BC, an alliance of Greek city-states fought the invading Persian army at the pass of Thermopylae in central Greece. Vastly outnumbered, the Greeks held back the enemy in one of the most famous last stands of history. On the first day of the siege, when Xerxes demanded the Greeks surrender their arms, Leonidas is said to have replied Μολών Λαβέ . A small force led by King Leonidas of Sparta blocked the only road through which the massive army of Xerxes I could pass. Leonidas and his men repulsed the frontal attacks of the Persians for the first two days, killing roughly 20,000 of the enemy troops and losing few of their own. After three days of battle a local resident named Ephialtes betrayed the Greeks, revealing a mountain path that led behind the Greek lines. Athanasios Diakos/Αθανάσιος Διάκος Made by: Greece91 (1788-1821)A Greek military commander during the Greek War of Independence and a national hero. The Turks would typically offer captured Greeks the option of conversion to Islam or death, and most Greeks chose the latter being deeply attached to their religion, with the most prominent example being Athanasios Diakos. After a fierce battle in which Diakos fought bravely against overwhelming odds, the severely wounded Diakos was taken before Omer Vryonis, a Turkish commander, who offered to make him an officer in the Ottoman army if he converted from Christianity to Islam. Diakos refused the offer, replying "I was born a Greek, I shall die a Greek" ("Εγώ Ρωμιός γεννήθηκα, Ρωμιός θε να πεθάνω"). The next day he was impaled and roasted alive.
