Bob Einstein is the brains inside Super Dave's crash helmet. He too is a survivor and he's worked with the best of the best. In recent years, you've seen him in 'Oceans 13' and 'Arrested Development' and as the unstoppable 'Marty Funkhauser' on 'Curb Your Enthusiasm.' But Bob's been getting laughs for a long time. The son of a comedian and the brother of writer/director Albert Brooks, Bob wrote for 60's rebels 'The Smothers Brothers', sharing the writing room with Steve Martin and Rob Reiner. In the 70's, he worked with everyone from 'Sonny and Cher' to Redd Foxx. Then, in the 80's, 'Super Dave' became a household name and he did it on a Canadian show - the always outrageous 'Bizarre' with John Byner. Rush on The Hour with George Stroumboulopoulos http://www.cbc.ca/thehour Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson 1968 in the Toronto suburb of Willowdale a young band called 'Rush' was formed. Guitarist Alex Lifeson, singer/bassist Geddy Lee and then, a couple of years later a new drummer - Neil Peart joined in. Together, they made Canadian music history. Rush's debut album was the biggest selling debut by a Canadian band. But that's not all. When it comes to bands having released the most gold or platinum albums in a row, Rush is a solid fourth, following Aerosmith, The Rolling Stones and The Beatles. Overall, 'Rush' has released 18 albums, sold more than 40 million of 'em and played sold out shows around the world. 'Rush' are certified Canadian Rock Royalty. They've been inducted into the Juno Hall of Fame, they've got a star on Canada's Walk of Fame and they've been made Officers of the Order of Canada. David Byrne on The Hour with George Stroumboulopoulos http://www.cbc.ca/thehour David Byrne is one of the most creative all-around artists alive. In the early '70s, David formed the 'Talking Heads', which went on to become one of the most influential groups in music. They were anti-corporate, experimental and helped revolutionize music videos. In 2002, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. David's been honoured by the Grammy's, Golden Globes and has even won an Oscar for 'The Last Emperor' soundtrack. He's also an accomplished visual artist - turning an entire building into a giant musical instrument and designing a series of bike racks for New York City. These days, he's teamed up again with music whiz Brian Eno. They've put out a new album together called 'Everything That Happens Will Happen Today' Brian did the music, David the lyrics and voice. Andrew Young on The Hour with George Stroumboulopoulos http://www.cbc.ca/thehour Andrew Young is one of the most influential African-American political leaders of our time. Born in New Orleans, he graduated from high school at 15, got a degree from Howard University and ended up as a pastor in Alabama. Along the way, Young became involved in the civil rights movement, eventually becoming one of Martin Luther King Jr's closest advisors. After Dr. King was killed in 1968, Young ran for Congress and served four years in the House of Representatives - as a Democrat. No small achievement, especially considering he was the first black congressman from Georgia in 100 years. Then in 1977, another first. Under President Jimmy Carter, Andrew became the first African American to serve as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. In 1981, he was elected mayor of Atlanta - one of the poorest cities in America at the time. But as mayor through the '80s, Young turned things around. He brought in billions of dollars in private investment and helped secure the '96 Olympics. In recent years, he's shifted his focus. Young is producing documentaries. Mariane Pearl on The Hour with George Stroumboulopoulos http://www.cbc.ca/thehour Back in 2002, the murder of journalist Daniel Pearl shocked the world. Daniel was working for the Wall Street Journal, as its South Asia Bureau Chief. At the time, he was in Pakistan - investigating the case of shoe bomber Richard Reid, as well as alleged links between al-Qaeda and Pakistan's intelligence service. Daniel was on his way to an interview when he was kidnaped by militants. Nine days later, he was killed and beheaded. All of it, videotaped by his captors. Left behind after all this, was his pregnant wife Mariane - also a journalist. The couple met at a party in Paris, got married in 1999, and moved to India. The day after 9/11, the Pearls traveled to Pakistan, along with a slew of media. They reported from there until early 2002. A day before they were to leave on vacation, Daniel was kidnaped. In the aftermath of his murder, Mariane wrote a book about her experience called 'A Mighty Heart', which was turned into a film starring Angelina Jolie. Mariane now lives in Paris, with her son Adam. Most recently, she's written a series of columns for 'Glamour' magazine, featuring brave women around the world. Mariane says she wanted to show her son there's hope out there. Jay Baruchel on The Hour with George Stroumboulopoulos http://www.cbc.ca/thehour Jay was born in Ottawa and was raised by his mother in Montreal. As a kid, Jay loved scary movies, so much so that he told his mom he wanted to be the next Stephen King. Being a good mom she signed up Jay for acting classes. His first gig was on a popular teen series 'Are You Afraid of the Dark.' That led to a starring role on the YTV show 'My Hometown.' After that, it was 'Popular Mechanics for Kids' with another Canadian - Elisha Cuthbert. Then, the serious acting began. Jay landed the role of an obsessed Led Zeppelin fan in the film 'Almost Famous.' By then, Jay says he was pretty much done with acting, and was headed to film school, until he landed a role on Judd Apatow's latest TV series at the time - 'Undeclared.' Though the series on Fox was short lived, the impression Jay made on the industry wasn't. Movie roles poured in - 'Rules of Attraction', 'Million Dollar Baby', 'Knocked Up', 'Just Buried' and this past summer, 'Tropic Thunder.' These days, Jay spends his time between Montreal and L.A. His latest project is the movie 'Real Time', a comedic drama about a compulsive gambler given one hour to live by the man hired to kill him.
