CAPTURING REALITY : THE ART OF DOCUMENTARY

http://www.nfb.ca/capturing-reality 33 FILMMAKERS 14 COUNTRIES 1 PASSION "Real life is so much more interesting than anything you can make up" - Kevin Macdonald, director of One Day in September, Touching the Void & The Last King of Scotland Filmmakers have been turning their cameras on the world since the time of the Lumière brothers — and the idea of documentary has sparked impassioned creative debate ever since. Some of the genres most influential directors reflect upon its unique power in Capturing Reality: The Art of Documentary. Over 30 luminaries — including Albert Maysles, Errol Morris, Alanis Obomsawin, Michel Brault, Nick Broomfield, Kim Longinotto and that great iconoclast Werner Herzog — offer insight into their craft while reflecting on the nature of representation and the perennially contested status of the truth. Can film capture reality? What ethical issues arise when portraying real lives? How does editing or music condition our emotional response to film? More than 100 clips enliven the discussion, offering a panoramic overview of contemporary documentary cinema, from Grey Gardens and The Thin Blue Line to The Day I Will Never Forget and Darwins Nightmare. RiP : A REMIX MANIFESTO

http://nfb.ca/webextension/rip-a-remix-manifesto In RiP: A remix manifesto, Web activist and filmmaker Brett Gaylor explores issues of copyright in the information age, mashing up the media landscape of the 20th century and shattering the wall between users and producers. The films central protagonist is Girl Talk, a mash-up musician topping the charts with his sample-based songs. But is Girl Talk a paragon of people power or the Pied Piper of piracy? Creative Commons founder, Lawrence Lessig, Brazil's Minister of Culture Gilberto Gil and pop culture critic Cory Doctorow are also along for the ride. A participatory media experiment, from day one, Brett shares his raw footage at opensourcecinema.org, for anyone to remix. This movie-as-mash-up method allows these remixes to become an integral part of the film. With RiP: A remix manifesto, Gaylor and Girl Talk sound an urgent alarm and draw the lines of battle. Which side of the ideas war are you on?

UNDER THE HOOD, A VOYAGE INTO THE WORLD OF TORTURE

A film by Henriquez Patricio. Documentary retracing the stories of several people who were illegally tortured by democratic countries convinced of their absolute right to do so. September 11, 2001 saw the birth of a new world order. The war against terror now allows institutionalized violence to be exercised with full impunity. The documentary Under the Hood, a Voyage into the World of Torture tells the unknown stories of the victims of a new barbarity and gives a human face to the suffering. Patricio Henríquez looks back at the history of torture, which was systematized by the Catholic Inquisition in the Middle Ages, as well as at the shameful history of American complicity wiht torturers, and calls for vigilance. Unless we believe in our collective values, we may be pushed to self-destruction by a new totalitarianism.

At the heart of the film is a revealing road trip with pit stops in six of them in which we find a rich vein of characters grappling with issues that lie at the centre of how Americans define their freedoms in the 21st century. And as we see in these towns, liberty is always in jeopardy and conflict. THE STRANGEST DREAM Uploader: nfb
THE STRANGEST DREAM

http://www.nfb.ca/strangest-dream The Strangest Dream tells the story of Joseph Rotblat, the history of nuclear weapons and the efforts of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs which he founded to halt nuclear proliferation. Nuclear physicist Joseph Rotblat was branded a traitor and spy after walking away from the Manhattan Project, builders of the first atomic bomb. But, with Bertrand Russell, he went on to help create the modern peace movement, and eventually to win the Nobel Peace Prize. The film takes us from the site of the first nuclear test, in New Mexico, to Cairo, where contemporary Pugwash scientists meet under the cloud of nuclear proliferation, and to Hiroshima, where we see survivors of the first atomic attack. Featuring interviews with contemporaries of Rotblat's, members of the Pugwash movement, and passionate public figures including Senator Roméo Dallaire, The Strangest Dream demonstrates the renewed threat of nuclear weapons, while encouraging hope through the example of morally engaged scientists and citizens.

THE MUSEUM

http://www.nfb.ca/the-museum ART, EGO & STEEL BEAMS. Its tough running a museum in the 21st century, competing with all the flashy distractions of the digital age. So when William Thorsell assumes command of Torontos Royal Ontario Museum, he moves quickly to rejuvenate the beloved but dowdy old lady of Bloor Street. As former editor of one of Canadas leading newspapers, Thorsell envisions an iconic public building— a bold gesture that will inject a shot of architectural amphetamine into the staid and sensible veins of Canadas biggest burg. Who to trust with such a venture? Enter Daniel Libeskind. More than a celebrity architect, Libeskind is a global brand linked to some of the worlds most prestigious building projects, including the most famous of all—Ground Zero. As Libeskinds unusual crystalline structure rises into the Toronto sky, Thorsell and Libeskind dance a high-tension tango. Budgets are blown. Timetables trashed. Citizens outraged. Smartly tuned to contemporary debates on public architecture, The Museum charts the progress of Thorsells grand scheme in an entertaining tale of art, ego and steel beams.

GRIEFWALKER

http://www.nfb.ca/griefwalker "Not success. Not growth. Not happiness. The cradle of your love of life is ... death" Stephen Jenkinson has been called the Angel of Death. Whether sitting at the bedside of a dying woman, or speaking to clinicians dedicated to delaying death, Jenkinson bears a message that most do not want to hear: that death is not something to be denied or avoided—but "befriended." A Harvard-trained theologian who has travelled far from Western religion, Jenkinson says there is a "hole inside most of us and it's in the approximate shape of a soul." Griefwalker is filmmaker Tim Wilson's extraordinary portrait of his friend Jenkinson and his work. The film is framed by Wilson's wrestling with his denial of his own death as he nearly succumbs to a sudden illness, and his having to face the death of someone very close to him. Beautifully using the imagery of impermanent nature, Wilson documents Jenkinson's work with the dying while challenging him to explain how "death is the cradle of your love of life." Griefwalker weaves an illuminating picture of a remarkable man, and leaves us with a deeper understanding of how our deaths should be held as "a prized possession."

HA'AKI Uploader: nfb
HA'AKI

http://www.nfb.ca/haaki HA'Aki is a short abstract-impressionist film in which the animation and the music were made simultaneously in an organic process of symbiotic creativity. Filmmaker Iriz Pääbo tells the highly subjective story of a complete hockey game using a new cinematic vocabulary she calls "animbits." Pääbo readily admits she is not the biggest fan of "Canada's national game," so the great, though highly underappreciated NHL stalwart of the '60s and '70s, Eric Nesterenko, was her hockey muse in this artistic journey. HA'Aki is a lyrical and wonderfully unorthodox interpretation of hockey as played in the mind of a lyrical and wonderfully unorthodox animation artist.

HEAVEN ON EARTH

http://www.nfb.ca/heaven-on-earth Vibrant and irrepressibly alive, Chand (Preity Zinta) is a young bride leaving her home in Ludhiana, India, for the cavernous landscape of Brampton, Ontario, where her husband Rocky (Vansh Bhardwaj) and his very traditional family await her arrival. Everything is new to Chand, everything is unfamiliar including the quiet and shy Rocky who she meets for the first time at the Arrivals level of Pearson Airport. Chand approaches her new life and her new land with equanimity and grace, and at times the wide-eyed optimism of hope—her first snowfall is a tiny miracle of beauty, and the roar of Niagara Falls creates the excitement of new beginnings. But soon optimism turns to isolation as the family she has inherited struggles beneath the weight of unspoken words, their collective frustration becoming palpable. No one feels the pressure more than Rocky, weighed down by familial obligations. A controlling mother who can't let him go, a sweet but ineffectual father, and a sister whose two children and unemployed husband are also a burden. All live with Rocky and Chand in a two-bedroom house in the suburbs of Toronto. To make matters worse, Rocky is expected to find the money to bring his extended family to Canada. Unable to express his anger, he finds other ways to release it and it's Chand who bears the brunt of his repressed rage. Trapped in a world she cannot comprehend and unable to please her husband, Chand is desperate. Hope comes in the form of Rosa (Yanna McIntosh), a tough and savvy Jamaican woman who works alongside Chand in a factory where immigrant women from all over the world clean and press dirty hotel laundry. Rosa sees past the make-up that covers Chand's bruised face. Realizing Chand has nowhere to turn, Rosa gives her a magical root advising her "to put it in whatever the bastard drinks." The root is supposed to seduce the one who takes it, making them fall hopelessly in love with the person who gives it to them. Chand's attempts with the magic root lead to surreal incidents and her life gradually begins to mirror an Indian fable involving a King Cobra. As the lines between fantasy and reality converge, Chand and Rocky come face to face with each other and themselves. *** WATCH OTHER CLIPS : http://beta.nfb.ca/search/?s=heaven+on+earth
