How do I tell if a motor's start winding has failed?
Our dryer stopped working the other day: when I press the Start button, it starts running, but as soon as I let go of the button it stops again. I've done a bunch of investigating, and the usual causes for this don't seem to be the problem. One expert told me that the start winding on the motor has probably failed, and the motor needs replacing. Before I spend the $100+ to buy a new motor, though, I'd like to be sure that that's the problem. Is there some way to test a dryer motor's start winding to see if it's failed? I have the dryer almost completely disassembled, so I can access the motor easily. Thanks for any help you can give me. My wife is about to kill me for not just hiring a repairman or buying a new dryer.

How to turn a motor into a generator and use it to charge a car battery?
I am planning to build an electric vehicle and I would like to have regenerative brakes to increase its travel range. Some people say that a motor and a generator are basically the same thing. But how come a car alternator doesn't turn on its own even when it's connected to a car battery? I plan to power the electric motor with four 12volt batteries connected in series to make a total of 48volts. What should I do to be able to instantly convert the motor into a generator (to convert kinetic into electrical energy and charge the batteries) as the vehicle is in motion? is there a need for some complicated circuit boards to do this? if I were able to switch the positive and negative connections to the motor as the vehicle is moving then would it charge the batteries?

What is the relationship between Motor current and the amount of material on a conveyor?
I want to use motor amps from say a 40 hp motor, to estimate the tons per hour of rock being carried by the conveyor. I am wondering if the relationship is linear with respect to motor amps? Any idea? TPH = Factor * motor amps - factor2, what do you think?

Will a trolling motor generate electricity and charge a battery if it is pulled thru the water?
Specific application I'm looking at is using a high thrust trolling motor on a small sailboat for the auxiliary propulsion. Research indicates this will work great. However, the various sites advise using solar/wind/ or shore power for recharging. Suppose the motor was left down, we raised the sail, and the prop began to freewheel. Seeing as how this is a DC motor, wouldn't it start generating electricity? Has anyone tried this? What type of controlling circuitry would be needed if any to charge the house batteries?

What type of motor and battery would I need to make a human-powered generator?
I had a 350W AC motor that did not work for this purpose. Do I need to have a DC motor? Also, what type of battery should I use? Obviously, it must be rechargeable so should I go with a lead-acid battery? This system will have a human-powered crankshaft, a motor, a battery, an inverter, and will need to produce 100W maximum to charge my laptop battery through the inverter.

How do I find the motor supply voltage and amps of a given motor?
I found a windshield wiper motor, how do I find the amps and voltage supply required to find a suitable motor driver? Will getting a multimeter, putting a 9v battery into the motor as well as the amps of the battery, and putting this into Ohm's law, and solving for resistance. Then how do I find the amps/voltage drop using this method, or others?

How to check whether the motor rewinder has used IP55 insulation while repairing the burnt motor?
Generally, after the motor is burnt,it is sent for rewinding & the motor rewinders repair the same. It is very difficult to findout whether he has used the specified ingress protection insulation class.

What is the best method to clean an ac motor?
The motor is out of a dryer (240 VAC) so there is lint build-up in the motor's grease. The casing seems to be a cast iron that has been... connected... not welded, not screwed together. I see no way to get the case open to pull it apart. I can get it working properly for about 24 hours using generous amounts of WD-40, but the motor builds up some physical resistance after this time. I feel I need to clean the contacts, and relubricate the motor. I can see the contacts as the case only holds everything together, and does not fully enshroud the windings. What can I use to clean the motor without dissasembling it further, or how can I dissasemble the case (if you have come across this before you know what I mean). I am an apprentice electrician so I already understand the safty concerns of fixing an appliance.
