Why is there an International Date Line?
On New Year's Eve 1999, we were able to watch the year 2000 arrive around the world as every hour, it was midnight in the next time zone. It started in New Zealand and made its way to Hawaii. My question is if the date is changing every hour somewhere in the world, why do we need a fixed point on the planet where the date changes regardless of the time? Doesn't having the International Date Line mean that the date is actually changing two places in the world at the same time, i.e., at the Date Line and wherever it is midnight?

Sorry folks, but you're wrong. It passes through Kiribati though all islands east of 180° within the Republic of Kiribati observe the same date as the islands west of 180° even thought they are positioned on opposite sides of the International Date Line. can someone explain something to me about the international date line when travelling by air?
how is it that is travelling from west to east by air the journey you lose a day when crossing the internatoional date line but at the same time you arrive 2 days later. i`ve been looking at flights and if you leave on say the 1st you arrive on the 3rd how can this happen if you lose a day

I have a question about the international date line?
Hello, I read an article about the International Date Line, I am kind of confusing when I read to this part. ' It is stated in the previous paragraph that when it's friday in the sub-zone west of the international date line, it's thursday to the est of the date line. does that mean I will have to subtract while traveling from west to east, I will have to add one day ahead even though it's the same time? does it mean the standard date and time, or local time and date? I can't get it.
